The Wash Day Series: Part 10 ~ Building Your Own Healthy Hair Routine
We’ve made it!! Ten weeks. Ten conversations. Ten opportunities to look at hair care a little differently. If you’ve been with me from the beginning, I hope one thing has become clear: There isn’t one perfect hair routine. And honestly? I think that’s one of the biggest reasons so many people become frustrated with their hair.
We live in a world where social media is constantly showing us someone else’s routine. One person washes once a week. Another washes every three days. Someone swears by oils. Someone else avoids them completely. One influencer layers six products. Another uses only two! Before long we’re left wondering... “Am I doing this wrong?”
Maybe not. Maybe your hair simply has different needs.
I am not saying that the advice that you are seeing is not useful or helpful. It is always good to find out how different products work on differing hair types. Their advice can truly help you when thinking about making a purchase. Some advice may also add value and provide real nuggets that you can add to your routine or take something out that you may have noticed does not work well for you.
Stop Looking for the Perfect Routine
There isn’t one. There is only the right routine for you. Healthy hair isn’t created by copying someone else’s regimen. It’s created by learning how your hair responds. The products, techniques and schedule that work beautifully for one person may leave someone else’s hair dry, limp, oily or difficult to manage. That’s perfectly normal. Hair is personal.
Your Scalp Sets the Pace
Throughout this series we’ve talked about shampooing, cleansing and wash schedules . One thing I hope you’ve taken away is this: Your scalp often determines how frequently your hair needs attention. A healthy scalp creates the best environment for healthy hair. If your scalp becomes oily quickly, you may need to wash more frequently. If it’s dry, sensitive or easily irritated, your routine may look completely different. Listen to your scalp. It’s usually the first to tell you when something needs to change.
Your Hair Type Matters…But It Isn’t Everything
Knowing whether your hair is straight, wavy, curly or coily is helpful. Understanding your density, strand thickness and porosity can also provide useful information. But those things don’t tell the whole story. Your routine should also consider: Your lifestyle, your work schedule, your climate, your exercise habits, your styling preferences, whether your hair is colored, relaxed or texturized, the amount of heat you use, your willingness to maintain a complicated routine. Your hair routine should fit your life. Not the other way around.
Your Goals Should Shape Your Routine
Ask yourself:
What am I actually trying to achieve? Longer hair? Healthier curls? Less breakage? More moisture? An easier styling routine? Better scalp health? Shinier blowouts?
Different goals require different approaches. Once you’re clear on your goal, every decision becomes easier.
Products Don’t Create Healthy Hair
I know…that sounds strange coming from a hairstylist. Products absolutely matter! But products alone don’t create healthy hair. Consistency does. Technique does. Gentle handling does. Proper cleansing does. Balanced moisture does. Regular maintenance does.
The best products in the world can’t compensate for habits that continually damage the hair. But great products in conjunction with the above, a winning combination!
Learn to Observe Instead of Guess
One of the greatest skills you can develop is learning to observe your hair.
Ask yourself: How does it feel? How does it look? Is it becoming dry sooner than usual? Does it feel heavy with buildup? Are my ends tangling more? Is my scalp itchy? Is my style lasting as long as it normally does? Your hair is constantly giving you information. Most of us simply haven’t learned how to listen yet, it takes some time but you must pay attention.
Be Willing to Adjust
What worked six months ago may not work today. Your hair changes. The weather changes. Your hormones change. Your schedule changes. Your health changes. Your styling choices change. Your routine should evolve too. Healthy hair care isn’t rigid. It’s responsive.
Progress Over Perfection
Please don’t leave this series thinking you need to buy twenty new products or completely overhaul your routine. That was not my goal. My hope is simply that you begin making more informed decisions based on the information that I provided and your ability to apply that information to your hair routine.
Maybe you’ll shampoo a little differently. Maybe you’ll use less heat. Maybe you’ll stop waiting so long between trims. Maybe you’ll pay closer attention to your scalp. Maybe you’ll finally stop comparing your hair to someone else’s. #pleasedo
Maybe you will implement all of the above with more confidence because of the information provided, and your personal analysis of your hair and it’s needs. Those small changes often produce the biggest results.
Healthy Hair Is Built One Wash Day at a Time
Healthy hair doesn’t happen because of one amazing product. Or one expensive salon visit. Or one viral tip. It happens through consistent care over time. One wash day. One conditioning treatment. One protective style. One good decision after another. That is how healthy hair is built…. and maintained.
Final Thoughts
When I started this series, my goal wasn’t simply to teach you how to wash your hair. It was to help you understand it. Because once you understand your hair, you stop chasing trends. You stop buying products simply because they’re popular. You stop comparing your journey to someone else’s. You become more confident. More intentional. More consistent… and that’s when healthy hair becomes sustainable.
Thank you for joining me throughout The Wash Day Series. I hope it’s changed the way you think about hair care. Remember… The best routine isn’t the one that’s trending. It’s the one that works for you!
If this series has helped you understand your hair just a little better, then we’ve accomplished exactly what I set out to do!
Thank You…..
Thank you for spending these past ten weeks with me. Whether you’ve read every article or you’ve just joined the conversation, I’m grateful you’re here. This may be the end of this Wash Day Series , but it’s only the beginning of your healthy hair journey.
As always…
I am here to help. There is sooo much more on the way! Soon come!
